New research from The University of Adelaide in Australia. "...researchers have shown for the first time how peppermint helps to relieve Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which affects up to 20% of the population."In a paper published this week in the international journal Pain, researchers from the University's Nerve-Gut Research Laboratory explain how peppermint activates an "anti-pain" channel in the colon, soothing inflammatory pain in the gastrointestinal tract.
Dr Stuart Brierley says while peppermint has been commonly prescribed by naturopaths for many years, there has been no clinical evidence until now to demonstrate why it is so effective in relieving pain.

FDA has issued an alert about a serious and potentially fatal adverse effect associated with benzocaine products both as a spray (used during medical procedures to numb the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat), and benzocaine gels and liquids sold over-the-counter and used to relieve pain from a variety of conditions, such as teething, canker sores, and irritation of the mouth and gums. The product shown at the left is an example of a topical product containing benzocaine, but it is not the only one.FDA recommends:
- Benzocaine products should not be used on children less than two years of age, except under the advice and supervision of a healthcare professional.
- Adult consumers who use benzocaine gels or liquids to relieve pain in the mouth should follow the recommendations in the product label. Consumers should store benzocaine products out of reach of children. FDA encourages consumers to talk to their healthcare professional about using benzocaine.
So, what can you use for teeting, canker sores, and irritation of the mouth and gums? Here are just a few examples from Young Living:Thieves mouthwash
Clove essential oil
Thieves Dentarome toothpaste

Many of you know my son Matt’s story- his diagnosis of asthma at 15 months, and then Ann and my use of essential oils that rid him of his respiratory symptoms within a few weeks. What you may not be as familiar with is my daughter Megan’s story.
Our use of essential oils on Matt began in the late Spring of 1999. So by the time Megan was born in October of 2000, Ann and I had become true believers in the power of Young Living oils. Megan was introduced to oils even before she was born (I massaged Ann’s abdomen with essential oils, and Ann inhaled peppermint during the delivery).
After Megan was born, we continued using oils, including but was not limited to: rubbing lavender on her stuffed animals before bedtime, diffusing Thieves oil blend in her room, and massaging very small amounts of diluted peppermint oil on her tummy when she had an upset stomach. We became frequent readers of the Essential Oils Desk Reference. After a few years, we took notice that Megan never had the runny nose/green snot/sneezing that is so common to most young kids. I think it was when Megan went through two years of public pre-school and experienced no colds, no flu, no ear infections, and no antibiotics or meds of any kind that we started to realize how unusual this was. In fact, when we called Megan’s pediatrician’s office to schedule her physical for kindergarten, we had to wait two weeks. They had shipped Megan’s medical records to storage because it had been so long since Megan was seen at their office that they assumed we had moved away!
I just want everyone to know that having colds, flu and ear infections does not have to be part of a child’s life (or anyone’s life for that matter). Just start using essential oils!

The LiveStrong website has just relayed some significant research on the health benefits of Fennel essential oil. Some highlights..."Fennel essential oil, extracted from the seeds...showed antioxidant properties and was effective at killing several different types of bacteria and fungi"
"...fennel oil was effective against 48 different cultures of Acinetobacter baumannii, a bacteria that causes respiratory infections and is a problematic infection in hospital settings."
"...researchers concluded that fennel essential oil shows promise as an insecticide."
